Welcome back to another character highlight for the upcoming Legends of Evorath series. Book 1, The Shadows of Erathal, launches October 29th, 2024. And to celebrate that upcoming launch, I’ll be highlighting one of the main characters every day leading up to the launch. Each week, I’ll review the format, which will include a starting section about the character and their upbringing. Next, there is a “spec sheet,” akin to a traditional RPG’s character sheet where I lay out all the vitals of a character. Finally, I’ll close out with some more about the character, their interests, hobbies, skills, and other pertinent details.

Today, we’re digging into the titular shapeshifter Zelag, who first appeared in Book 2 of the Evorath trilogy, The Rise of Yezurkstal. He’s the only character whose perspective spans from that trilogy to The Legends of Evorath, so let’s see what makes him so special.

Who Is Zelag?

When Yezurkstal breeched the space between worlds and humans flooded into Evorath, Zelag had never once left his home village. His people, an ancient race of magical shapeshifters, lived in peaceful harmony since after the demon wars. Known as the Preajin, these shapeshifters are unaffected by magical spells and can use their ability to shapeshift into anything from a small pebble to a great dragon. But when humans found themselves in a world of magic and confronted with these shapeshifters, their fear instinct turned to violence and Zelag witnesses the destruction of his entire village, including the death of his people.

Not even Zelag is sure of his exact age, but he is the last Preajin to be born. After surviving the destruction of his people, Zelag was taken in by Evorath’s Avatar, where he better learned to control his ability and learn about the greater world around him. But following the events of the Evorath trilogy, Zelag went out on his own. With a deep sense of not belonging and a need to adventure to keep him from dwelling on his orphaned status, Zelag became a notorious mercenary in Erathal.

The Spec Sheet

Since Zelag is a shapeshifter, his physical attributes can vary significantly from form-to-form. However, he is known to most favor his human form, a sort of morbid reminder of what happened to his family.

  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: 186 cm (6’1″)
  • Weight: 90kg (198 lbs.)
  • Hair: brown, medium length
  • Eyes: blue
  • Body Type: lean and muscular, with little body fat
  • Features: tanned and weathered skin
  • Typical Clothes: studded leather armor
  • Accessories: bastard sword, a variety of knives and daggers, assorted currencies

What Makes Him Tick?

Though he tends to keep his motivations private, at this time in Zelag’s life he was struggling with his place in the world. On one hand, his mercenary work across Erathal allowed him to explore new cultures and learn all sorts of skills (some of them less savory than others). On the other, his connections to the people of Marftaport and involvement in the battle against Yezurkstal fill him with a sense of duty and a sort of familial connection. Despite his conflicted nature, Zelag is consistent in his desire to learn the secrets of Evorath and to become the strongest he can possibly be.

Zelag will make his next appearance in Book 1 of The Legends of Evorath. Pre-order your copy today, or mark your calendars for October 29, 2024 to order from your favorite retailer.
